# Best Vocal Steamer for Singers: A Research-Based Comparison

There is no single best vocal steamer for singers: we found no study that compares one steam inhaler with another, so the right one is the one that fits where you steam. Going by the makers' own documents, a plug-in model fits home and a cordless one fits a dressing room with no free outlet; a bowl and towel cost nothing. We did not test these steamers hands-on. We compared manufacturer specifications and instructions, current prices (checked October 11, 2026), and published buyer ratings where a source is recorded. There are no scores and no winner below.

## How to read this comparison

The list holds eight steam inhalers that have an official manufacturer page in our files, then the free bowl method, then one device that is not a steamer.

* **Prices and ratings** name the seller or site, and they change. Amazon.com figures were shown for a Los Angeles delivery address; its counts are star ratings, not written reviews.
* **Manufacturer details** were checked October 11, 2026. The Vicks documents were read from Internet Archive copies (dated in Sources), because the maker's site showed a bot check that day; those copies show no maker's price.
* **Buyer comments** were recorded for two models only, the Crane EE-5948 and the Beurer SI30. For the other six we recorded none.

## The steamers side by side

"Not on file" means our files do not record it. Amazon.com prices are for new units sold by Amazon.com. The Mypurmist 2 price includes a handsfree strap, the Free price is the base kit, and the MY139 price is the package its store calls "1 device + 2 extra sets".

## At home, near an outlet

At home you have a wall outlet, which all four plug-in models need; the V1200 manual also asks for a flat, stable surface.

![A blank notebook, pen and tea beside a closed laptop on a wooden desk](https://vocalsteamer.com/images/posts/best-vocal-steamer-for-singers-inline-1.jpg)

### Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler V1200 and Sinus Inhaler VIH200

Both are corded units from Kaz USA that heat tap water you pour in. Per its archived manual, the V1200 boils the water, starts steaming after about 3 to 5 minutes and runs 5 to 15 minutes a session, with flow levers to adjust the steam. The VIH200 FAQ gives about 6 minutes to first steam and the same session length.

The V1200 manual says to use water only, never medications or inhalant liquids; it does not name salt, saline or essential oils. The VIH200 FAQ rules out essential oils, medication and inhalant liquids. Each has slots for Vicks scent pads. Both warn against moving the unit while it holds hot water, and the VIH200 manual says that model is not recommended for use by children.

### Mypurmist 2 and MyPurMist Classic

Vapore, LLC sells both as plug-in handheld inhalers. For each, the maker states a steam temperature of about 100 to 115°F and its site says there is no scalding risk; its documents do not say where the temperature is measured.

The Mypurmist 2 has a HEPA air purifier and works only with the maker's sterile-water refills; its guide says any other water, additive or liquid will damage the device. The Classic has no HEPA purifier and also accepts store-bought distilled water.

Amazon.com showed both as currently unavailable. The listing titled Mypurmist 2 Plug-In Steam & Sinus Inhaler + Handsfree Strap carried 3.8 out of 5 stars from 397 ratings (October 11, 2026), but its own detail table gives the model name as Classic, so we do not count it as a Mypurmist 2 score.

Nothing we read for these four provides for saline in the tank ([vocal steamer with saline](https://vocalsteamer.com/vocal-steamer-with-saline/)). Closer looks: [MyPurMist as a vocal steamer](https://vocalsteamer.com/mypurmist-vocal-steamer/) and [the Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler for singers](https://vocalsteamer.com/vicks-personal-steam-inhaler-for-singers/).

## Warming up before a show

Backstage you may have no free wall outlet. Neither Vicks model may be used with an extension cord, and the V1200 manual says to let the unit cool before moving it and that it is for residential use only. A cordless model avoids the outlet, provided you charged it.

### Mypurmist Free

This is the maker's cordless model. Its user guide says the battery charges in about 2 hours and gives 30 minutes of use, against a typical session of 5 to 15 minutes, and that the device does not operate while plugged in. It has the same water rule and stated temperature as the Mypurmist 2.

The maker also sells a Vocal Wand attachment for the Free and the Mypurmist 2 ($12.95 for five at mypurmist.com, October 11, 2026), which it says directs warm mist toward the throat without affecting makeup. No manual covers the wand.

### Crane Cordless Steam Inhaler EE-5948

Crane USA's manual describes two modes, warm steam and cool mist, a 3-hour charge, and 15-minute sessions that end with an automatic shut-off; it does not say how many sessions one charge gives. It rules out hot water, distilled or purified water, essential oils and medication in the 20 mL reservoir. Neither the manual nor the product page says how the warm steam is produced.

The Target.com rating (21 five-star and 6 one-star among the 33) is on a listing where the model number appears only as the title of a product video. In the 8 most recent written reviews on [that page](https://www.target.com/p/-/A-78301066) (May 2022 to November 2025), 4 said the warm setting was cool or barely warm, 2 said the unit stopped working or leaked early, 2 liked the cordless design, and 2 questioned the price.

### Steam in a warm-up: one small, mixed study

The only warm-up study in [our research library](https://vocalsteamer.com/research/) is Keltz & McHenry (2022): 12 women tried 3 minutes of steam, 3 minutes of straw-in-water phonation, or both, in a morning warm-up. Results were highly variable. Of the 7 participants analyzed, steam was best for 1 and worst for 3, who strongly disliked it. So find out how you respond on an ordinary day, not on a show day. The Vicks and Mypurmist documents we read give no waiting time between steaming and singing; [how long to steam your voice](https://vocalsteamer.com/how-long-to-steam-your-voice/) covers session length.

## Traveling

* **Voltage.** Mypurmist's guides give 100-240V for all three models. The VIH200 manual gives 120V, 60 Hz, and the Crane EE-5948 charges from a 120V outlet. The V1200 leaflet prints both a travel note saying it adjusts from 120 to 240 volts and a safety item naming a 120V AC outlet; we report both as printed.
* **Power.** Of the models whose power source is on file, only the Mypurmist Free and the Crane EE-5948 run without an outlet. The Free needs the maker's refills in your bag.

We state no airline rules; ask your airline before you pack a battery device. [Steaming your voice on tour](https://vocalsteamer.com/steaming-your-voice-on-tour/) and [portable vocal steamers](https://vocalsteamer.com/portable-vocal-steamer/) go further.

## On a budget

### The free method: a bowl and a towel

Steam needs no device, and NHS leaflets describe the method without agreeing on the details. Guy's and St Thomas', on a page for people recovering from vocal cord surgery, describes a bowl of boiled water that has cooled a little (not water that has just boiled), a towel over your head and the bowl, and your head about 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches) from the water for 5 to 10 minutes. St George's, in a leaflet for people with voice difficulties related to head and neck cancer treatment, says hot plain water, no oils, for 2 to 3 minutes. West Suffolk prefers a steam-inhaling mug filled with just-boiled water and says to be extremely careful with it.

Hot water scalds; [DIY vocal steamer](https://vocalsteamer.com/diy-vocal-steamer/) has the steps.

### The lowest listed prices

Three inhalers carried a listed price under $45 on October 11, 2026 (sellers are named in the table above): the Vicks VIH200 and two for which our files are thin.

* **Crane Corded Steam Inhaler EE-5955.** The one manual rule on file: no essential oils, medicine, vapor pads or other additives in the water reservoir.
* **Beurer Steam Inhaler SI30.** Amazon.com showed it temporarily out of stock. The first 5 of the 11 reviews on [Beurer's own page](https://www.shop-beurer.com/products/beurer-steam-inhaler-si30) are all five-star, with no negative review shown; repeated themes include ease of use and compact size (2 of 5 each). We have no manual on file, so check its power and water rules before you buy.

Count the water too. The Mypurmist Free and Mypurmist 2 take only the maker's refills, $19.95 for a box of 20 at mypurmist.com on October 11, 2026. [How much are vocal steamers?](https://vocalsteamer.com/how-much-are-vocal-steamers/) sets out the prices in full.

## What the research can and cannot tell you

It cannot pick a brand. In the main steam study on file (Mahalingam & Boominathan, 2016), 45 vocally healthy women breathed through the mouth for about 10 minutes, which raised jitter and shimmer and lowered harmonics-to-noise ratio; after 3 minutes of steam from a facial steamer, those measures moved back toward baseline. It is a small lab study (level of evidence 4), and the measures are acoustic, not a rating of how anyone sang. [Does steam help vocal cords?](https://vocalsteamer.com/does-steam-help-vocal-cords/) reads it beside the mixed warm-up result above.

If steam makes you cough, stop and ask a doctor. The NIDCD says to see a doctor if you have been hoarse for more than three weeks (especially without a cold or flu), are coughing up blood, have trouble swallowing or breathing, feel a lump in your neck, have pain when speaking or swallowing, or lose your voice completely for more than a few days.

## Last, and not a steamer: a saline nebulizer for the road

This device is sold by the company that owns this site and is a different kind of thing, so it sits last. A mesh nebulizer turns the liquid in its cup into a cool mist, not steam.

It comes up for singers because of the nebulized-saline studies. In 34 classically trained sopranos, perceived effort after 15 minutes of dry air returned to baseline only after nebulized isotonic saline, while phonation threshold pressure (PTP), a lab pressure measure, did not change significantly (Tanner et al., 2010). In 60 vocally healthy women, no nebulized treatment significantly sped recovery of PTP (Tanner et al., 2007). Neither is a test of any product.

The [Mayluck MY139](https://mayluck.store/products/mayluck-portable-mesh-nebulizer?utm_source=vocalsteamer.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-vocal-steamer-for-singers&utm_content=inline) is a rechargeable mesh nebulizer; its store listing (read October 8, 2026) gives a built-in battery, Type-C USB charging, two mist settings and 10- or 20-minute timer settings. The kit includes no saline, so you would need sterile saline labeled for inhalation or nebulizer use, a purchase you keep making; anything prescribed goes in only as your doctor directs.

Mayluck's store has its own guide to [the best nebulizer for singers](https://mayluck.store/blogs/care/best-nebulizer-for-singers?utm_source=vocalsteamer.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-vocal-steamer-for-singers&utm_content=inline), and [vocal steamer vs. nebulizer](https://vocalsteamer.com/vocal-steamer-vs-nebulizer/) compares the two kinds of device.

## Steam or saline mist?

Steam is warm water vapor and suits home, where an outlet or a kettle is close. A nebulizer makes a cool mist from saline, which is what the saline voice studies used, and a battery model needs no outlet or hot water. It is a different device, not a kind of steamer.

[Portable saline option](https://mayluck.store/products/mayluck-portable-mesh-nebulizer?utm_source=vocalsteamer.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-vocal-steamer-for-singers&utm_content=bridge-box) [How nebulizers are used and cleaned](https://mayluck.care/models/my139?utm_source=vocalsteamer.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-vocal-steamer-for-singers&utm_content=bridge-box)

Disclosure: both buttons lead to sites run by the company that owns VocalSteamer.

![Mayluck MY139 handheld mesh nebulizer in blue](https://vocalsteamer.com/images/products/mayluck-my139-blue.jpg)

### Mayluck MY139: saline mist for singers on the road

If you tour and want saline mist where there is no kettle or free outlet, this is a battery nebulizer the company that owns this site sells. It fits for a plain reason: the saline voice studies used nebulizers, not steamers, and the MY139 runs from a built-in rechargeable battery. It has two mist settings and a 10- or 20-minute timer. It makes a cool mist, not steam; the kit includes no saline; and no battery-life figure is verified.

Disclosure: Mayluck is sold by the company that owns VocalSteamer.

## Questions

### What is the best vocal steamer for singers?

There is no single best one, and we name no winner: it depends on where you steam. The sections above match each model's listed features to home, a pre-show warm-up, travel and a tight budget.

### Is there a voice steamer made specifically for singers?

"Vocal steamer" and "voice steamer" describe a use for a personal steam inhaler; [what is a vocal steamer?](https://vocalsteamer.com/what-is-a-vocal-steamer/) covers the forms. The Vicks and Mypurmist manuals we read do not mention singing. Mypurmist's website markets its Vocal Wand to singers; the wand's page cites no study.

### Which vocal steamer has the best reviews?

We do not rank by stars, because the figures come from different sites and listings. On October 11, 2026, the Amazon.com ratings on file ran from 3.8 out of 5 (793 ratings on the Mypurmist Free Essential Kit listing, and 397 ratings on the listing titled Mypurmist 2, whose detail table gives the model name as Classic) to 4.3 out of 5 (7,919 ratings, Vicks V1200).
